In February 1987, as the AIDS crisis gripped the world, GAS studio head Bill Houston created the Captain Condom series — a bold, witty response to the WHO's Global Program on AIDS and the UK Government's landmark "AIDS: Don't Die of Ignorance" campaign. This all-characters edition brings the entire gang together on a single retro comic art graphic tee.
- Captain Condom — cashier at a sperm bank by day, latex superhero by night
- Johnny — the Captain's loyal tea-boy sidekick from the same sperm bank
- Birth Rate Rose — the Captain's sworn enemy, needle always at the ready
- Frenchie — the battery-operated Throb-ot with interchangeable heads
- The Condomobile — a bubble car with a gossamer roof that pulsates whenever a condom is needed
When Norman Fowler, then Secretary of State for Health, launched the campaign, the government believed millions could become infected. A leaflet went to every home in the UK. Prime Minister Thatcher reportedly wasn't a "natural supporter" — a view Fowler called "eccentric" as hospital wards were "full of young men dying". Fowler later claimed that "90% of the public recognised the advert and a vast number changed their behaviour because of it."
Not much changes. Just the age group.
