GAS retro T Shirt design, Custard Beast Estartit, 1966 SO-09
John Rees, the original partner in Great Alternative Stores (GAS), in the winter of 1966, was commissioned to paint the interior of a club in a beach front hotel in Estartit, Costa Brave. He did not like 'custard beat', played while he worked and so, working at night to a tight schedule in a 'cave' area on this design and under the influence, shouted "I am being chased by a .......custard beast". The club owner liked it and named the club accordingly.John Church has found a shot from 1967 which he feels sums up the atmosphere of 'Holidays' With DJs'.
"A private party shot of the usual suspects feeling no pain in a club called 'The Custard Beast' (how 1967 is that?) I'm in the centre of the picture with my mouth open, as usual."
